Eternity In A Nutshell
By Ben Smith
Eternity cannot be grasped,
It can only be imagined,
I see the days on a calender,
They add up to small numbers,
I know that it cannot be such a short time,
It must have been ages,
It feels as if time has stopped only for me,
And the people I love,
Eternity is grasped by time,
Time cannot be grasped by man,
Eternity is forever,
But I see the timeline.
This poem can be viewed differently depending on the person. I’m not going to share my initial view on this writing because I find it quite personal. After reading it over a few times, I was able to find even more meaning in it. I’ve found the poem as a sign that we should have less worry about such small things in life because we can only comprehend a small amount of time in the vast eternal space of life and death. I have found that the life we are living is only a chip of the nutshell that God has planned for us. The format that I used for this poem is inspired by the freeverse that Emily Dickinson used.
